The Palm Springs Airport (PSP) is the closest and most convenient to the Westin as it is only 7 miles (15 minute drive) away. Smarter Traveler writes “With 10 top airlines providing non-stop service from 18 cities, the Palm Springs International Airport connects to more than 500 destinations around the world. By traveling through the Palm Springs International Airport, you can leave behind the long lines and wait times and instead enjoy the airport’s open-air design. The airport’s tranquil environment is just one of the reasons why Palm Springs International Airport was named one of the Top 10 Most Stress-Free Airports in America.”
We checked Expedia and there are some very reasonable airfares from many of the cities that our members will be travelling from. I wouldn’t wait too long, however, to book your flights to PSP since it is a smaller airport and the number of flights is more limited. You can rent a car at the airport if you plan to do a lot of driving around the greater Palm Springs area. If you just want get around to dine and shop, consider Uber:
Additionally, there are four other major airports in Southern California that provide access to Greater Palm Springs. These will offer more airlines, more flight choices and possibly lower fares. There will also be the need to rent a car and the longer commute time (versus 15 minutes from Palm Springs Airport):
ONT: Ontario International Airport (1 hour 15 minute drive)
SNA: John Wayne Airport – Orange County (1 hour 30 minute drive)
LAX: Los Angeles International Airport (2 hour drive)
SAN: San Diego International Airport (2 hour 15 minute drive)
Two other major airports in the southwest to destination cities:
LAS: Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (4 hour drive)
PHX: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (4 hour drive)
According to USA Today, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are generally the best days to book when fares are at their lowest. This is because airlines often launch special discounts on a Monday evening in an attempt to secure sales for the coming week after observing demand through the day. Competitors then tend to lower their prices to match these discounts, meaning more options for the consumer. By Thursday, or at the latest Friday, most, if not all, of these discounted tickets have been taken.
Be sure to check out the additional “On Your Own Activities” on our website before you book your airline reservation. I encourage you to spend an extra day to enjoy the sights in the Palm Springs area. Remember, the great hotel rates are available three days before and three days after our meeting dates!
